About the Miss America Organization Just a quick history of the Miss America Organization: it began in 1921 in Atlantic City as a celebration calculated to extend the tourist season, with young women competing from each state. In 1945 the offering of the first scholarship was instituted. Today the Miss America Organization is the world's largest provider of scholarships for young women. Then in 1980 the Organization began requiring each contestant in the local, state and national competition to declare a “platform” on a subject meaningful to her but having an impact on the community, locally and nationally. Titleholders for local, state and national “Miss” events have undertaken to champion serious current-day causes, “ranging from AIDS awareness and prevention programs to programs in support of homeless veterans.” DEVELOPED BY THE MISS AMERICA ORGANIZATION, THE MISS AMERICA PROGRAM EXISTS TO PROVIDE PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG WOMEN AND TO PROMOTE THEIR VOICES IN CULTURE, POLITICS AND THE COMMUNITY. The program provides a forum for today's young women to express their viewpoints, talents and accomplishments to audiences during the telecast and to the public-at-large during the ensuing year. Almost all contestants have either received, or are in the process of earning, college or postgraduate degrees and utilize Miss America scholarship grants to further their educations.” www.missamerica.org/organization-info/key-facts-and-figures.aspx To make this event successful we are raising funds to support the scholarships for these young women. To undertake a task of this magnitude requires a lot of community support – and that is where you might be able to help. We will be looking to build a strong foundation of volunteers (does your company encourage employees to put in volunteer hours?), raising money for scholarships – but, we are also in need of in-kind goods and services; anything from catering to decorations, from small items for gifts or consolation prizes to bottled water for the behind the scenes people.
